Madlib’s Beat Konducta: Dirty Beats & Dirty Covers

If anyone is wondering why it looks like there is black mold growing on their copy of Beat Konducta Vol. 6, here is the reason: it is black mold.

The covers for the vinyl editions of Beat Konducta Vol. 1, 2, 5 and 6, designed by Jeff Jank, are all from the same piece of cardboard. This was originally a library sound-effects record belonging to Peanut Butter Wolf which was being stored in a closet. After a leak and subsequent water damage in 2004, this record cover was thrown onto a back porch where it sat for at least a year before being used on Beat Konducta Vol. 1, and then Vol. 2. Two years later, aided by some spray paint and a lot more mold, it became Beat Konducta Vol. 5 and 6.

The disintegrating cardboard is still hanging around the office contaminating its surroundings. As long as Madlib keeps making dirty beats, we’ll keep trying to use it for covers.

Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6 will be released on CD on February 10, 2009.

Heliocentrics release Sirius B feat. Vast Aire

Sirius B is the final installment of the three vinyl-only EPs released in conjunction with The Heliocentrics debut album Out There. This album collects the exclusive tracks from these three EPs. Three vocal tracks and five original instrumentals complete the collection.

Track list:
Distant Star feat. Percee P and DOOM
Distant Star (Instrumental)
The Oracle
Space Time Girl
Before I Die feat Guilty Simpson
The Gorn
Sirius B (Remix) feat. Vast Aire
Vibration Of The Fallen Angels

A 12-inch single for “Sirius B feat. Vast Aire” will drop in 2009.

Rhythm Trax Vol. 3 & 4

Baron Zen’s Rhythm Trax Vol. 3 is the third installment of Stones Throw’s DJ Friendly Rhythm Trax Series (preceded by James Pants and DJ Romes), and the follow-up to his early 90s four-track post-punk masterpiece, At The Mall.
On Vol. 3, Baron Zen departs from his garage band roots summoning the spiritual essence of early 80’s electro pioneers such as Alexander Robotnik
and Ryuchi Sakamoto. The soundscapes of this Rhythm Trax contribution satisfy the need for synth-drenched funk while maintaining a murky atmosphere intended to move even the haughtiest New Wave revivalist.

Dam Funk’s Rhythm Trax Vol. 4 is the fourth installment of Stones Throw’s DJ friendly Rhythm Trax series (preceded by James Pants, DJ Romes, & Baron Zen), and the follow-up to his debut 12-inch release entitled “Burgundy City b/w Galactic Fun.” On Vol. 4 Dam maintains the instrumental theme, displaying his technical mastery of old school drum machines and early 80s analog synthesizers. The soundscapes of this Rhythm Trax contribution provide enough bass to rattle trunks while maintaining colorful melodies perfect for even the most intimate moments.

HE5 Merry Christmas Psychedelic Sound (Korea, 1969)

"Can you link to this so the $--- I spent on this record will give someone some psychedelic Christmas cheer?” - Egon

I can’t front. When it comes to Korean Christmas records, my man Cut Chemist has me beat. He returned from Seoul earlier this year with some insane Christmas Carol record that contained possibly the funkiest track I’ve ever heard on a Korean record (Though my man Jason up in Toronto has been hipping me to some that sound incredible in their own rights, I haven’t heard ‘em yet).

But I had to get up in the Christmas mix myself (I was getting tired of playing the James Brown Soulful Christmas album and David Axelrod’s Messiah around the folks’ place every December) so I bought the He 5’s Merry Christmas Psychedelic Sound for Xmas ‘07 rotation.

Read about and listen to an MP3 of HE5's Merry Christmas Psychedelic Sound over at the Now-Again website.
