Stones Throw Posters,Prints,Artwork

Stones Throw has always been about more than music. It's been creativity of many kinds: DJing, beat making, photos, artwork, and 3-foot-high anteater-looking vandals, among other things.

We've been contacted many times before with requests for our printed posters or original artwork, but we've never been able to make these things available until the launch of our online store this year.

Check these out ... We've got hand-printed & signed photos, on down to regular poster art:

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Releases Old Money On Stones Throw Digital Release available Now Exclusively At Stones Throw. CD/LP Released Jan. 27, 2009

Omar Rodriguez Lopez's Old Money is the first album that The Mars Volta guitarist/producer/writer/arranger will release with Stones Throw Records. The addictive melodies and passionate execution of each performance render Old Money perhaps the most accessible of his non-Volta recordings, and the perfect entry point to anyone not yet familiar with what this prolific artist has to offer.

The album fits comfortably between the guitarist's monumental work with The Mars Volta, and his prior rock-based solo releases such as 2007's The Apocalypse Inside Of An Orange. Loosely based on the concept of exploitative industrialists and, well, their old money, the album presents a 10-track collection of concise rock compositions, which range from progressive to psychedelic to downright funky. Many of these sounds could easily be at home on a Volta record proper had they meshed with Cedric Bixler-Zavala's vocals; Rodriguez Lopez has hinted that this record was a potential follow up to the 2006 Volta release Amputechture until he changed his musical direction.

Through the assistance of many of the players familiar to any fan of his "day gig", Rodriguez Lopez goes straight for the jugular with an unrelenting trio of opening tracks: the lead-in "The Power of Myth", the haunting, Middle Eastern-psych flavored "How to Bill the Bilderberg Group", and the blistering "Population Council's Wet Dream." The results are formidable and easily rank among the most exciting moments of Rodriguez Lopez's solo output. The remainder of the album is equally as memorable and certainly the product of acute inspiration on behalf of its creator. Though clear influences of popular ensembles such as Pink Floyd and Santana can be discerned, a deeper study reveals the cross-continental influence of Israeli garage psych heroes The Churchills, French proggers Ame Son and Magma and Turkish guitar-god Erkin Koray – amongst others.

This historical, though thoroughly modern, discourse ensures that this release fits perfectly within the ever expanding Stones Throw Records' novel. This album serves as an interesting new chapter in the same book that houses Madlib's interplanetary ramblings, Gary Wilson's recurring adolescent nightmares and The Stark Reality's fuzzy children's stories: all Mars Volta favorites.

Introducing: Mayer Hawthorne & The County

Mayer Hawthorne is Stones Throw's newest artist. His debut track “Just Ain't Gonna Work Out” (aka “I'm Sorry”) premiered on Giles Peterson's Best of 2008 (BBC Radio 1) a few weeks back. Mark Ronson picked it up for his show, saying “I have no idea what this is, old or new, but it's fucking good!”

We held off on saying anything about Mayer Hawthorne while we waited for these heart-shaped 45s to roll in. We've got them now: “Just Ain't Gonna Work Out” b/w “When I Said Goodbye” – limited 1000 copies.

Mayer Hawthorne is from Detroit and now lives in Los Angeles. He wrote, played, recorded and sang on these tracks. As for the rest of "what it is," check out Mayer Hawthorne's bio written by Ronnie Reese at the link below.

Mr. Chop on Now-Again Records Lightworlds EP Advance Digital Release

Lightworlds EP advance digital release

Coz Littler, aka Mr. Chop, has been kicking around for a while now. He’s released music on his own A.P.E. imprint, on Gerald “Jazzman” Short’s Stark Reality label and most recently on German-based Jazz&Milk Records.

We’re not saying that Lightworlds – his Now-Again debut – should make you forget about those records. They’re great records. But this is a different Mr. Chop. Let’s just say: this EP a helluva introduction, or reintroduction, to this burgeoning talent.

Assisted by Malcolm Catto (drums) and Jake Ferguson (bass) of The Heliocentrics (Out There - NA 5031) amongst a host of other crack UK session musicians, Mr. Chop offers up a futuristic mixture of fuzzy psychedelia, funk, jazz and musique concrete informed by years of record collecting and engineering at his Cheshire-based Ape Studios.

Mr. Chop - Lightworlds, a 7-track EP, is available now at the Stones Throw Store, and will be released on vinyl in December.

Chop's album will be released on Now-Again in 2009.

DJ Dusk's Rootdown Soundclash Now On DVD

Madlib vs Cut Chemist, Will.I.Am vs Thes One, Oh No vs Exile

Early in 2001 the Los Angeles club Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash,” organized & hosted by DJ Dusk. Based on the reggae sound system competitions, this was a hip-hop event - in this case featuring Madlib and Cut Chemist - going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club.

Madlib was then unknown to many in the crowd, and Cut Chemist was at the height of his success with Jurassic 5. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd.

Approximately a year later, the Root Down organized the round two, featuring Will.I.Am and Thes One. The drama and controversy of Round Two arose from the huge aesthetic differences on display between the "combatants." The theatrics of the evening - clothes being taken off, ludicrous names and costumes - made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day. And Will.I.Am wasn’t a multi-platinum artist yet!

The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003. With a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect.

Mochilla's Eric Coleman and B+ filmed all three events, but never had plans to release this as a DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk in 2006 they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions... just raw hip-hop at its most exciting: vital and real.

E' ufficiale!
